Learning to Ride
If the surf is up at the Jersey Shore, Connor McAuley will definitely grab his board and try to catch a wave.
The 18-year old and class of 2025 Don Bosco Preparatory High School graduate spent summer days at his grandparents house in Mantoloking.
"I probably was on a boogie board first but I would watch my dad Christian surf and wanted to learn," said Connor.
His wish came true and at 8-years-old his dad had him up on a board and surfing.
While riding a wave may be exhilarating, it is the calm before the thrill that appeals to Connor.
"I love sitting on the board and the peacefulness while you wait for a wave," said Connor. "It is relaxing and calming out on the open water."
Surfing Around the World
In addition to New Jersey, Connor has surfed in Costa Rica, Rhode Island and in Europe.
"My mom, Carolina Giraldo's family is from Spain so I have surfed there during our visits," said Connor. "I have also surfed in Nazare, Portugal."
His current favorite surfing spot is one not commonly thought of as a surfing destination… Rhode Island.
"Lots of the beaches are points and jetties and the push will allow you to surf multiple minutes," said Connor.
Shark Encounters and Big Waves
Has he ever encountered a shark?
"I have seen them in Mantoloking," said Connor. "I just sat on the board and the shark will leave you alone."
Connor surfs on a 5', 11" performance board.
"You start off on a 7' board when you are first learning to surf because it is easier to balance and stand," said Connor. "The biggest wave I ever surfed was about 15-16 feet."
