You may want to call Grant Herrman a "Renaissance Man" when it comes to outdoor activities.
The 15-year-old, Indian Hills High School sophomore plays soccer and golf, enjoys mountain biking and fishing and also skis.
“I love the physical activity and fun of soccer and skiing as well as the peacefulness of fishing and relaxation of golf,” said Grant.
Soccer on the Varsity Stage
Like most children, Grant started playing Wyckoff Recreation soccer in elementary school. In fourth grade, he joined the Torpedoes soccer club.
He says his most memorable game occurred when he was in fifth grade.
“The score was tied 4 to 4 and the goalie slipped in the last few minutes of the game,” explains Grant. “I got the ball and scored. We won the championship.”
Today, Grant plays on the varsity boys soccer team at Indian Hills High School in both the striker and right wing position.
“I am hoping to gets some great passes, score some goals and have fun this season,” said Grant.
Grant said he enjoyed watching this summer’s World Cup matches and is inspired by the play of Erling Haaland.
He is also a fan of the Premier League team Manchester City “Man City.”
Golf with Dad and a Personal Best
Grant is member of the Indian Hills High School golf team and especially enjoys playing golf with his dad, Brett.
The father and son play at Crystal Springs, Wild Turkey, Ballamor and Vernon Valley golf courses.
“My best score was when I played with my dad at Vernon Valley and had a score of 87,” said Grant. “It find golf a relaxing activity after a long day and I especially like playing nine holes at sunset.”
Fishing, Biking, and Hitting the Slopes
Another relaxing activity for Grant is fishing.
Locally, he enjoys catch-and-release fishing for bass, sunnies and catfish at Zabriskie Pond in Wyckoff and Shadow Lake in Franklin Lakes.
For salt water fishing, Grant joins his dad on their boat hoping to lure blue fish, stripped bass and flukes in Raritan Bay and Sandy Hook.
“My biggest catch was a this Spring when I caught a 37-inch stripped bass weighing about 35-40 pounds,” said Grant.
Back on land, you will find Grant mountain biking at Mountain Creek as well as around Wyckoff.
“I am looking forward to skiing at Mountain Creek and Camgaw this winter,” said Grant.
