Lisbon, Portugal
Vibrant, Relaxed, and Authentic
Lisbon is one of those European cities that combines culture, history, and beauty. Its laid-back nature makes it an easy European entry point for travelers who want culture without stress.
A ride on the iconic tram through Alfama is essential, weaving through narrow streets and colorful facades, and watching the sunset from a miradouro provides breathtaking views over the city's hills and the Tagus River. For day trips, Sintra and Cascais are within easy reach, offering palaces, gardens, and charming seaside escapes. These are easily reached by car or public transit.
One of my favorite evenings in Lisbon was experiencing the unforgettable Fado music. These soulful, emotional performances often take place in intimate restaurants, combining beautiful music and delicious Portuguese cuisine.
And speaking of food, Lisbon is truly a food lover's dream. Indulge in pastel de nata, the classic Portuguese custard tart, or try bacalhau, a salted cod dish that is a staple of Portuguese cuisine. Even on a hot summer day, the caldo de marisco, a rich seafood soup, is bursting with flavor and complements any entree. Check out Portugal's local wines, my favorite being their Vinho Verde, and try ginjinha, a sweet cherry liqueur, to round out the culinary experience.
Hilton Head → Savannah → Charleston
Southern U.S. Road Trip:
A slower-paced Southern road trip combines beaches, history, and charm, all of which can be combined into an itinerary lasting about ten days.
Hilton Head Island is the perfect start. The island has wonderful trails, perfect for biking or running. Spend your days relaxing on Coligny Beach, kayak or paddleboard through the marshes, and savor fresh seafood at waterfront restaurants. Beginning here eases you into vacation mode before moving into more active sightseeing.
Savannah is just 45 minutes to an hour away. Stroll through historic squares draped in Spanish moss, walk along River Street, and consider a guided history or ghost tour — even the kitschy ones are memorable! One of the best ways to experience Savannah is from the water on a riverboat cruise, with daytime, sunset, and dinner options offering narrated stories of the city and waterfront views. Don't miss sampling classic Southern cuisine, such as shrimp and grits, deviled eggs, fried green tomatoes, and pecan pie, along the way.
Charleston awaits roughly 2–2.5 hours from Savannah. The city offers incredible architecture, history, and food. Stroll Rainbow Row and the historic district, walk The Battery along the waterfront, tour historic homes or plantations, and explore local shops and markets. Like Savannah, Charleston is a foodie's dream: she-crab soup, fresh oysters, and Southern-style brunches are not to be missed.
Travelers have flexibility: pick up a rental car in Hilton Head, or fly into Savannah and home from Charleston. Either way, the close driving distances make this trip manageable and enjoyable.
Berlin → Prague:
Exploring Central Europe
For a mix of modern city life and historic charm, a trip to Berlin and Prague is ideal. Berlin offers landmarks like the Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, the East Side Gallery, and Museum Island. Vibrant neighborhoods such as Kreuzberg and Prenzlauer Berg provide local flavor, and summer adds long days filled with open-air concerts, street food markets, and beer gardens.
Driving to Prague is straightforward, roughly 4–4.5 hours along the Elbe River, with optional stops in Dresden or smaller Czech towns for scenic breaks. This trip can easily be done by car or rail. In Prague, visit Prague Castle and St. Vitus Cathedral, stroll across Charles Bridge at sunrise or sunset, and explore Old Town Square. Don't forget local flavors such as Czech goulash, trdelník, and local beers. Feeling adventurous? Visit a beer spa in Prague, where you can soak in warm, aromatic beer while enjoying a uniquely indulgent and surprisingly fun Czech experience!
